What should I do next to set up my web site?

You need to create your HTML files and upload them to the server. You can create HTML files using any text editor on your local machine or using tools such as Claris Homepage or FrontPage.

I am transferring my domain name to your network, what is the procedure?
If your domain name is registered at Network Solutions, and you have chosen the "mail-auth" authentication scheme, we will generate an e-mail template for you. The template will be sent to the e-mil address of the current admin contact for the domain name. When received, you must "reply" to the message, and send it back to hostmaster@internic.net. It is imperative that you do not modify the template when sending it. Your domain name should complete transfer within 48 hours after you "reply" to the template message.

My domain name has been registered/transferred to your network. Why can't I access my web site?
After your domain name has been registered/transferred, there is a propagation period of at least one week for the entire internet to learn about the new registration/change. Each ISP must individually update their DNS server(s), and the time-frame for this action depends on your ISP. Some ISP's do this daily, while some only do this on a weekly basis.

Can I upload my files and access my web site before my domain name completes the registration / propagation process?
Yes. All of our accounts receive a dedicated IP address, which you can use as the "hostname" for FTP and your "web address" for browsing.

How can I edit my web files on my site?
You cannot directly edit your files on our server, unless you are using FrontPage.. You should download your files to your local machine and upload them back to your site after editing.

How to use FTP to upload files to your server?
Please refer to our FTP guide or the FTP section of our on-line manual.

I have uploaded my file to my site, but I cannot see it using a browser. What is wrong?
There are a few reasons why you are not seeing your web files.
Please make sure that the folowing is true:

  • Your file is an HTML file with extension .htm or .html;
  • You have uploaded the file under the "www" directory
  • You have replaced the default index.htm with your own index.htm file in the "www" directory

I have uploaded all my files to my site, but why I still see my default welcome page?
The welcome page is a default index.htm file in your "www" directory. You will need to replace it with your own index.htm file.

How can I access my site?
You can access your web site by typing in your domain name in your browser. If your domain name has not completed registration with the InterNIC, you can access your site by typing in your IP address in your browser.

How can I login to your server?
If you need access to the server via. telnet, please ask support to activate your telnet account. After your telnet account is active, you can log into the server by typing telnet:yourdomain.com in your browser. You will use the same login and password that you use for FTP.
